I’m a family violence specialist based in Karachi, Pakistan. I’m a graduate of the University of London School of Law, with more than ten years of experience in family and gender-based violence and trauma-related work.
I’m the founder of The Jugnu Project – Pakistan’s Digital Domestic Violence Resource Center. We act as a facilitation center, connecting survivors with much-needed resources and services to rebuild lives of dignity and respect.
My work includes campaigning for equity under family law, with a focus on domestic violence, property and inheritance laws. Additionally, I provide training to survivors of domestic violence and abuse, advocates, civil society and security personnel, with the aim of helping them better understand the issue(s) regarding family violence (especially in desi society) and coercive control; alongside a understanding of the domestic violence laws at present, and how to combat taboos regarding said violence.
Some of the institutes where I have conducted my trainings include the Syeda Waheed Gender Institute at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS); the Sindh Social Protection Authority (Government of Sindh); and the Liaquat Dental College.
Additionally, I also conduct webinars and (more informal) round table conversations regarding family violence, gender inclusivity, financial independence and family law.
I have had a diverse career path, and have previously been associated in different professional capacities with Dawn.com, CHT Melbourne (Hospitality) and YourNest Australia.
As a community leader, I have had the privilege to spearhead projects related to gender-based violence. I work to inculcate gender diversity and inclusion at both the corporate and community level(s). I enjoy writing about gender-based violence and domestic violence, and financial abuse, in the hope that my writing can bring about some change in the desi family system.
